A Special Treat From Harley-Davidson With The Pan America ST

Harley-Davidson has launched a Sports Tourer based on the Adventure bike, the Pan America. Due to the popularity of Adventure Bike track racing in America, the brand has created the ST to attract buyers who want an Adventure bike that is more road-focused. Jeremy Webb tested the 150 bhp and found it a treat to ride.

Riding a Harley-Davidson is always a special experience, and this was confirmed during my testing of the Pan America ST, the company's new Sports Tourer. Aimed at riders who want an upright riding position from an Adventure bike but with a more road-focused approach, the model fulfils this role superbly. It provides greater comfort than a sports bike or a naked streetfighter, and a longer range for extended rides.

The ride quality and handling of the ST represent a marked improvement over the standard PanAm, though it's important to note that this enhancement comes at the cost of some off-road capability. This performance boost is achieved through several key modifications, starting with the introduction of new cast alloy wheels. These sporty 17-inch rims replace the previous 19/17-inch combination found on its adventure-oriented predecessor, now paired with Michelin Scorcher Sport tyres for better street performance.

The bike is also equipped with a shorter-travel Showa suspension system that offers full adjustability, allowing riders to fine-tune their setup for an optimal experience. Complementing this is a new one-piece sports seat that is not only lower in profile but also designed to enhance the bike's overall aggressive aesthetic. The modifications extend to the bodywork, which has been further streamlined to enhance the sporty silhouette.

Changes to the geometry have also been made, resulting in slightly more responsive steering than the standard PanAm. The wheelbase has been shortened from 1585 mm to 1570 mm, while the trail has decreased from 108 mm to 95 mm. Overall, these adjustments have resulted in a bike that is not only 25 mm lower but also lighter, shedding 12 kg in the process. The result is an edgier, more dynamic stance that is immediately felt by the rider, emphasised by the sleek, minimalist cut-down seat.

While the view ahead remains familiar—dominated by Harley's impressive 6.8-inch TFT touchscreen dash—the screen's reduced height gives it a sportier flair. Upon mounting the Harley-Davidson Pan America ST, the overall impression is one of a machine that is far more manageable, agile, and attuned to urban dynamics, inviting riders to embrace its sharper, more street-smart character.

The Pan America ST excels on A and B roads, showcasing impressive agility, excellent comfort, grip, and power.

When it comes to braking performance, there are no shortcomings whatsoever. The motorcycle is equipped with advanced Brembo radial calipers that grip onto substantial 320mm twin discs, delivering exceptional stopping power and precision. This braking system is further enhanced by cornering ABS, ensuring a blend of control and confidence even in challenging conditions.

In terms of overall chassis experience, there are echoes of the classic V-twin Multistrada and the even earlier Triumph Tiger Sport 1050. However, this model elevates the experience with cutting-edge electronics, a vibrant TFT display, high-quality cycle components, and a stylish design that draws the eye. The fusion of modern technology with a nod to heritage creates a riding experience that's both nostalgic and thoroughly contemporary.

The all-new' Revolution Max’ engine, a striking 1250cc 60-degree V-twin, stands out as one of the most remarkable features of the original 2021 Pan America, and its continuation in the ST variant is nothing short of excellent. This powerplant is adorned with high-tech magnesium covers, showcases advanced variable valve timing, and employs sodium-filled exhaust valves for superior cooling, highlighting just a fraction of the cutting-edge innovations packed into it. It's safe to say that no Harley engine before it has embraced such modern technology.

Within Harley’s extensive lineup, this engine is available in two configurations. The full-throttle version, boasting 1252cc, powers both the robust Pan America and, in a slightly detuned variant, the Sportster 1250. For those looking for a more accessible entry point into the Harley experience, there's also a lighter, more approachable 975cc model, designed specifically for the entry-level Nightster.

In its complete PanAm configuration, this motorcycle delivers an exhilarating riding experience, showcasing remarkable responsiveness and a superb harmony between flexible midrange torque and impressive peak power. With specifications boasting 148bhp at 8750rpm and 94lb.ft of torque at 6750rpm, it accelerates with authority. Riders can choose from four easily accessible riding modes—Street, Sport, Rain, and Custom—each tailored to deliver a distinct performance feel suited to varying conditions. Additionally, the bike features a state-of-the-art quickshifter/autoblipper that enhances gear shifting without disengaging the throttle, along with switchable traction control for added safety and confidence. The hill hold control further ensures ease of use on inclines, rounding out a commendable electronics package that enhances both performance and rider comfort.

The Revolution Max engine stands out as an underappreciated gem within the Pan America 1250 adventure bike lineup. Even in its ST version, this powerplant continues to offer a remarkable blend of performance characteristics that make it both practical and engaging. It delivers an exhilarating ride when you want it to, eagerly responding to the throttle and thriving at higher revs. The well-tuned ride-by-wire system enhances the sporty feel, making every twist of the wrist a thrilling experience.

At the same time, the Pan America engine excels at lower revs, delivering impressively smooth power that instils confidence during more relaxed riding.

For maintenance, the servicing schedule requires routine checks after the initial break-in period of 500 miles, including an oil and filter change. Thereafter, maintenance is needed annually or every 5,000 miles. While this frequency isn't the most convenient, it's manageable and certainly not a dealbreaker for those who crave adventure on two wheels.

In person, the bike presents a striking presence, its design featuring sharp contrasts that catch the eye, reminiscent of a bold pair of Louboutin heels. While the ST may lack the wild, unapologetic flair of its inspiration, the Super Hooligan, this restraint is a welcome trade-off for enhanced practicality and comfort.

The foundation of the Harley-Davidson PanAmerica, though still a bit quirky in appearance, boasts a unique character with its broad, letterbox-style headlight. It resembles a wide-mouthed frog or Bender from Futurama (a nod for those familiar with classic animation). However, in this ST version clad in sleek black, the bike achieves a more aggressive stance. It sits lower to the ground, exuding a meaner, more purposeful aura that commands attention on the road.

The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 ST stands out as a premium motorcycle that seamlessly blends performance and aesthetics. With its sleek design and meticulous craftsmanship, this bike exudes the quality that is characteristic of the Harley brand. Although it is a new model, it is essentially a variant of a well-established motorcycle that has been on the market since 2021, a testament to its durability and reliability. Harley-Davidson has built a solid reputation for producing motorcycles that are not only stylish but also dependable, and the Pan America is no exception. With high-end components such as Brembo brakes, the ST is equipped with top-notch components, alleviating any significant concerns about its reliability.

At its core, the Pan America 1250 ST is a formidable machine, boasting an impressive 150bhp engine and a 1250cc displacement that caters to those who crave a sports-oriented riding experience. However, this exhilarating performance may come with higher insurance premiums, a common consideration for powerful motorcycles. Despite being a flagship model from a brand synonymous with luxury, the ST is designed to be relatively economical to maintain. This is mainly due to its moderate power delivery, a competitive initial purchase price, and Harley-Davidson's history of strong residual values. It's worth noting, however, that the Pan America has yet to achieve the same resale success as traditional Harley-Davidson cruisers. Consequently, there are substantial dealer discounts available on the adventure version, which could influence its future market value.

Upon its debut, the ST is attractively priced at £16,995, though opting for the striking red or sophisticated black colour choices—like the one we tested—adds £350 to the cost. Under the sleek exterior, the bike is powered by a robust 150bhp V-twin engine that impressively delivers fuel efficiency of over 50 miles per gallon. This power output suggests that maintenance costs for essentials such as the chain, tyres, and brake pads should remain manageable. However, given the ST’s inherently sporty design, actual wear and tear may vary significantly depending on riding intensity. If piloted with a gentle hand, riders might find themselves pleasantly surprised by the longevity of its components.

The Harley-Davidson ST stands out not merely as an upscale member of the iconic American motorcycle brand, but as arguably the most exhilarating and performance-oriented model the company has ever produced. With its sporty design and advanced features, one would naturally anticipate an impressive array of equipment, and indeed, it delivers.

At the heart of the ST’s cutting-edge technology is a large, vibrant TFT touchscreen dashboard that provides full Bluetooth connectivity with smartphones, enabling riders to integrate their devices seamlessly. The bike boasts an impressive electronics suite that includes multiple riding modes, traction control, cornering ABS, and an autoblipper for smoother gear changes—all features that place it squarely at the forefront of its category.

The Showa suspension, fully adjustable at both the front and rear, ensures a tailored ride that can handle a variety of conditions, while the high-performance Brembo radial brakes provide exceptional stopping power, instilling confidence in the rider. While these specifications might not be unique—many adventure sports bikes in this class offer similar technology—the overall package of the ST is remarkable, especially considering its price tag of under £17,000.

In contrast, competitors like the Multistrada, Tiger 1200 GT, and S1000XR cost more. This makes the ST not only a standout choice for sport-touring enthusiasts but also a special offering from Harley-Davidson, a name synonymous with both heritage and championship-winning performance.

In addition to its impressive standard features, this motorcycle offers a plethora of optional extras that enhance its appeal. Riders can choose from practical additions like luggage solutions and heated grips, as well as a selection of striking cosmetic upgrades to customise their ride. However, it’s important to note that the bike isn't without its flaws. Its sporty design compromises some of the plushness and luxury you might expect; for instance, the windscreen is relatively low and non-adjustable, which could be a drawback for taller riders.

Nonetheless, the bike's overall craftsmanship is exceptional—every component feels meticulously assembled, and the finish exudes a sense of premium quality. In terms of value, it stands out as a compelling choice.

Imagine enhancing your ride with a spirited Screamin’ Eagle exhaust can, perhaps adding a sleek top box for practicality, and opting for a taller screen to improve comfort. These modifications transform the bike into a genuine street machine with versatile performance that can confidently outpace nearly any competition on the road.

In reality, everything seamlessly converges to create what I believe to be one of the finest all-round street sportsters available on the market—this assessment is not made lightly. On paper, and in genuine road performance, it impressively encompasses nearly every desirable feature: a powerful and engaging engine that exudes character, a chassis that strikes a commendable balance between sportiness and comfort, and ample upright riding ergonomics for touring adventures. It boasts high-quality components, carries a classic brand heritage, and offers solid value for money.

While it’s not without its flaws, as its styling may not appeal to everyone—even the more flamboyant ST variant—and the windscreen could stand to be a few inches taller, those are relatively minor quibbles. Overall, this machine operates exceptionally well, showcasing versatility and allure. This specific version of the Pan America is undoubtedly the one I would be most inclined to own.
