The Renault 5 E-Tech revives the iconic model and the desire to own one.
The iconic Renault 5 of the 1970s and '80s has been reimagined as a full electric version with distinctive design nods to the Turbo model from the past. It was a much sought-after car forty years ago, and after driving the latest incarnation, Jeremy Webb predicts the Renault 5 E-Tech full electric will prove the same.
Introduction.
Ragging a Renault 5 around country lanes was a 1980s tradition for thousands of young lads who had been handed the keys to one as their first car. The vehicle had done its family duties as a practical and utilitarian car, getting children to school, doing the weekly shop and then transporting children to weekend activities. When the children grew up and needed a car, the Renault 5 took up these duties seamlessly, albeit with faded bodywork and worn interiors. The young drivers didn’t care because they were driving a great-handling car with decent performance for its engine size.
Spring forward forty-plus years, and those teenage drivers are itching to get behind the wheel of the latest Renault 5 E-Tech and reminisce about their early driving memories. Renault's marketing is excellent, bringing back an old model that was so popular, but to get sales, the new car has to live up to the iconic label imposed on the original model.
What will make people buy the latest Renault 5 variant after initially showing interest in testing it?
As its name suggests, the E-Tech is all-electric, offering two battery options: one with a range of 194 miles and the other with 255 miles. Both share the date-defying look of the original Turbo version, which is so appealing. We have seen other brands create their previous models in electric form, such as the Mini Cooper and Fiat with their 500e, and these have both proved a success. Renault had the obvious model to recreate and electrify with the 5, so it had to be done.
Range, battery and charging
There are two battery choices: a 40kWh lithium-iron LFP pack with a range of 194 miles and a 52kWh lithium-ion NMC pack with 255 miles. The Renault 5 E-Tech has a rapid charging ability of up to 100kW on the larger battery and 80kW for the smaller battery. This means that in around 35 minutes, you can charge the battery 10-80%. Home charging will take six to nine hours based on the chosen battery.
Practicality and Boot Space
Despite the Renault 5 E-Tech's size, the vehicle is convenient with its hatchback configuration. This allows two adults to sit in the rear and haul a decent-sized load, such as luggage, shopping, or sports kit. It can take five people if required, although they will be snug. But you don’t buy a Renault 5 E-Tech as a primary passenger carrier; you own one for the looks, performance, and handling. However, with 326 litres of boot space, you can cram in a lot of DIY kit and garden grow bags.
The vehicle is also rated for towing, so a small trailer can be taken to the tip, and extra luggage to the airport or some bikes.
For the front occupants, they will be happy with the room available to them, and you won’t be banging arms at all.
Interior and Technology
The interior of the Renault 5 E-Tech is totally modern and looks fabulous. The Iconic Five trim is the premium choice with stunning, matching colourful upholstery. There are plenty of colours to choose from, so every potential buyer will find something they desire.
The seats are comfortable, and you will find a good driving position despite limited adjustments. The touchscreen is 10 inches with clear graphics and allows wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Google software is built in and provides Google Maps.
Performance and Handling
Although the Renault 5 is not classified as a hot hatch, it is lovely and fun to drive. In comfort mode, the car feels lively performance-wise, and the handling is agile in town and sporty on the twisties. It is what those who can remember driving the original was. Engaging allows you to push on with pace and have confidence in the handling at all times.
Pricing and Specs.
The Renault 5 E-Tech costs £22,995 for the evolution model, which features 18-inch alloy wheels, a touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, electric windows, auto lights, wipers, and rear parking sensors.
Mid-spec is probably the best option, starting at £24,995 with the 40kWh battery, or £26,995 with the 52kWh pack. You get the charging indicator lights on the bonnet, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, more options for body colours, and a contrast roof and decals.
The Iconic Five is the top of the range and surprisingly is the only option with heated seats. It has the large battery as standard and costs £28,995.
Summary.
The Renault 5 E-Tech is like its original version, boasting practicality, versatility, and the delightful performance most buyers want. It may not be a hot hatch like the Turbo, but the power will impress, and it won’t be the main attribute in choosing an enjoyable car. It is set at an achievable price, which makes it even more desirable, along with the design. Owning a Renault 5 will make you happy.
