The Rivian R1T Electric Pickup.

The Rivian R1T electric pickup is a revelation in the truck market and proving popular with users. Since the Rivian R1T announcement, I have been intrigued by it. Now in production, I am captivated by its design and performance.

The R1T is powered by two or four electric motors, depending on your chosen model. The most potent model makes 835 horsepower and enables maximum towing up to 11,000 pounds

It is more compact than many rivals, so easier to manoeuvre in tight places than gargantuan offerings such as the Ford F-150 Lightning

There are three AWD drive systems for the R1T with Dual-Motor, Performance Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor, delivering exceptional performance, on-road and off. The range you can expect differs depending on your choice of battery pack and drive system, so in perfect conditions and road tyres, the kilometres can be 350 to 640.

The Rivian's cabin has luxury features and plenty of technology, including a 40 cm infotainment system and a separate digital gauge display.

Fueler enjoyed testing the R1T on and off-road, and the latter was aided by the truck's standard adjustable air suspension, available all-terrain tyres, and an optional carbon-fibre underbody shield. There's a price for all this ability and practicality, and no matter how you spec it, the R1T is an expensive Pickup, but so is its competition.

Performance from the Rivian R1T is incredible, and from the standard AWD with dual motors, you get 600 hp, then this leaps to 835 hp from the Quad-Motor model. During our test of the Rivian R1T the Quad Motor, we got to 100 Km/H in 3.3 seconds which is sportscar time and the slickest pickup I have ever been in.

A superb feature of the quad-motor version is that you can manoeuvre it like a tank by reversing the direction of the left wheels from that of the right. The vehicle can therefore spin on its axis, which can be helpful in seriously tight conditions. You get good handling from the R1T, and you can quickly adjust the air suspension to alter ground clearance from 20 cm to 35 cm making off-road journeys a doddle.

The Rivian's R1T cabin has leather and wood trim with large displays for the gauge cluster and the infotainment system. The pickup has an expandable and collapsible crossbar system for mounting gear over the bed and cabin. The R1T has a large front trunk under the bonnet, and a cargo tunnel behind the cab offers versatility and practicality, spanning the width of the bed and having large openings on both sides; you can load fishing rods, guns and much more. Then you have further options with a lockable in-bed compartment. Rivian says the truck has 0.4 cubic metres of lockable storage.

A large 40 cm infotainment display is tucked into the R1T's contoured dashboard, and a secondary digital readout serves as a reconfigurable gauge display. The infotainment screen uses expandable tiles for main options such as navigation, media, climate controls, and vehicle settings. These are available all the time at the bottom of the display. You don't need to delve into submenus as the options slide out of the side of tiles to reduce the system's complexity.

Rivian says every model will feature hands-free driver-assistance technology titled Driver+. You get plenty of safety aids, including

Standard automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

The Rivian R1T is fantastic; It has incredible innovations for users. The Front trunk, combined with the large payload area from the flatbed and cargo tunnel, means you get huge carrying capacity and lots of versatility on what you can haul. The brilliant addition of an air compressor built into the truckbed allows you to inflate the tyres if you need to or use air-power tools miles away from the garage. The truckbed also contains two 120v outlets to provide power for any requirements. The torch hidden in the driver's door is a lovely touch because you have light when needed.

All things considered, the Rivian R1T is incredible, well-designed and thought out; it has to be driven to appreciate how good it is. As the driver, you have everything you need to hand as the cabin is ergonomically sound; you can quickly touch or reach and see what you need. The interior is spacious for all occupants and light floods in from the panoramic roof.
