Luxury Travel in the Lexus LM Hybrid Hyper MPV
The Luxury Mover, or the LM from Lexus, is the marque’s entry into the world of limousine transport and befits the styling of a private jet. If you want to travel on the roads in style, relaxation and cavernous space, this Hyper MPV ticks all the boxes.
The Lexus LM is an MPV at heart, but the interior is on steroids, and buyers won’t be carrying the school football team or black bins for the tip. The occupants want to travel in the height of luxury, whether to a business meeting, the airport, or on a road trip to Lisbon.
You can choose the four-seat model, which has seats like first-class planes and plenty of room to spread out. The other option has seven seats and front— or all-wheel drive options. In the UK, the LM is a four-cylinder petrol-electric only.
The seven-seat option can have a cabin layout without a central chauffeuring-style cabin divider or four seats with a divider. The less expensive seven-seater, second-row occupant space is more significant because they are thought to be used more than the third-row flip-up chairs. The Lexus LM seven-seat version also has more room for cargo than the four-seat model.
The Lexus LM 350 h has a four-cylinder, 247bhp hybrid system, which is less powerful than considered rivals like the Volkswagen Multivan eHybrid, which happens to be considerably less money but not as luxurious. You notice the lack of power when you put your foot down, but this vehicle isn’t designed or intended to get you places rapidly. It is supremely smooth, easy to drive, and quiet around town.
Lexus offers the LM in two trim levels, and both come with massive amounts of technology, including heated, ventilated second-row massager seats and multimedia screens front and rear. The high-spec Takumi has two lounge-style reclining rear chairs, a 48-inch widescreen rear display, and a 23-speaker premium stereo.
Although the Lexus LM looks like a van, nothing could be further when you venture inside, and the brand has gone to town on luxury and passenger comfort. Large sliding side doors and a high roof allow you to step aboard as if into a black cab. In the top-of-the-range LM, you get two huge seats that are heated and ventilated, have seven massage programs, and can be adjusted from upright to fully flat. Widely adjustable, thanks to extending footrests, large, supportive headrests, and cushions and squabs that adjust for angle.
Enjoy the cinematic 48-inch multimedia display mounted in the central bulkhead or the many features throughout the cabin. Each rear seat has its phone-sized touchscreen remote for media control and seat adjustment, plus a wireless charging pad for your phone hidden in armrest storage.
You get a writing table that comes out of the seat’s outer armrest, plenty of storage, and a generous-sized drinks chiller. As a passenger, you feel like you are in first class on a plane cossetted for any journey.
The driver doesn’t feel as comfortable, and the Lexus LM is not the best MPVs to drive. Driving the Lexus LM, you are high up and squashed at the controls, which you would not get in a saloon or SUV. The vehicle also doesn’t feel light and easy to drive like a high-end MPV, similar to a heavy van.
“The Lexus LM is designed with the passengers in mind and they are very much the VIPs.”
The passengers will be oblivious to this as they relax in luxury, watching TV or being engrossed in music.
The soft suspension means the Lexus LM leans slightly in corners and roundabouts, but you never lose confidence in the vehicle’s grip and stability. The ride is smooth for all occupants, and getting up to 50mph is not an issue. Over 50mph strains the engine, so it takes time to build to motorway limits.
The Lexus LM caters for passengers, and not much focus is given to the driver. The concept of this vehicle is that it will be driven by a professional who will transport VIPs. However, I would love the money to buy one for family travel. I would be open-minded about the driving performance because I would know exactly why I purchased the Lexus LM, not for rapid driving on twisties or Autobahns, but for laid-back luxury journeys. It would certainly make the school run grand for the children.
